Ensuring that your entry form is filled out right the first time, is very important for any show! Some secretaries will contact you to correct your entry, or some will just put it in as is, leaving you to a possible invalid, paid entry for a show. In correct entries can lead to disqualifications on the show table.
Before filling out your entry form
First and foremost, before you fill out your entry form lets double check two very important details that are needed. These two details are the most common mistakes on entry forms: Ear Number and Sex.
It's always important to take a minute to look over the health and well being of your animal before a show, so while you are doing that, let note the ear # and sex, and make sure they are correct.
Ear# : Per ARBA Show Rules, all rabbits must have a legible permanent tattoo in their Left ear. The tattoo may be a combination of Letter & Numbers only. No Symbols are allowed. Look at the right ear and closely look at the tattoo. Is it clear and legible? Make note that this tattoo number is for that rabbit you wish to show.
What if there is no tattoo number? If no tattoo is listed in the rabbits ear, first check his/her pedigree if you have one, to see what the tattoo should be. If you have no pedigree, and the rabbit you have is a junior (under 6 months old) then you can put any tattoo in there that your little heart desires. Just remember to use numbers and letters only. If the rabbit you wish to show is over 6 months of age, it is a common courtesy to ask the person whom you purchased the animal from, what their ear number should be. Ear Numbers are used for identification by breeders and often times coordinate with a specific litter.
Once you have figured out what the correct ear number for the rabbit that you wish to show is, make a note for your entry form. If the rabbit is not tattooed already, now would be the time to find a local breed, or perhaps at your local 4H extension, to locate someone who would be willing to tattoo your rabbit for you. There may be an area set up at the show, and other folks available at the show that can also tattoo, but usually for a small fee.
Just know that the ear MUST be tattooed before it goes on the table. Incorrect, illegible, or missing tattoos is an automatic disqualification from show.
Sex: While looking over your rabbits health, double check the sex. Believe it or not, a junior may have looked like a buck last week, but this week its a doe. It happens to even the most seasoned exhibitors and breeders. The Sex Fairy. Entering your newly purchased doe, as a doe, can easily be disqualified as being in the wrong class when the judge discovers she is a he.
Of course, senior adult rabbits that have been proven to have a litter will not have this issue. But as an overall health check prior to a show, its always a good idea to look as sometimes, adult rabbits can have pimples, oozing, or redness that would indicate being unhealthy. These are also things a judge would disqualify for.
